Get Your Mind On Your Side

Successful weight loss is more than just eating healthy food and exercising regularly. A very important,  and much overlooked component, is the way you think about weight loss and the way you think about yourself. You can ruin your weight loss efforts if you indulge frequently in negative thoughts and you can increase your chances of success if you frequently practice positive thinking.

Below is a list of common negative thoughts on weight loss, with a list of substitute positive thoughts you can think instead.

Visualize Yourself Succeeding At Weight Loss

A recent study at McGill University reports that the best way to improve your eating habits is to not only create an action plan but to visualize yourself following through. Participants were asked to consume more fruit for one week. One group simply set the goal to eat more fruit. The other group set the same goal, wrote it down and also visualized carrying out the specific steps needed to eat more fruit. For example, they visualized themselves purchasing fruit and eating it at particular times. While both groups ate more fruit, the group that used visualization ate twice as much. This study supports the positive effects of visualization known for years by sport psychologists and peak performers. -Caloriecount.about.com

Visualization For Weight Loss

Creative visualization is the technique of using one's imagination to visualize specific behaviors or events occurring in one's life. Advocates suggest creating a detailed schema of what one desires and then visualizing it over and over again with all of the senses (i.e., what do you see? what do you feel? what do you hear? what does it smell like?). For example, in sports a golfer may visualize the "perfect" stroke over and over again to mentally train muscle memory.

In one of the most well-known studies on Creative Visualization in sports, Russian scientists compared four groups of Olympic athletes in terms of their training schedules:

Group 1 = 100% physical training;
Group 2 - 75% physical training with 25% mental training;
Group 3 - 50% physical training with 50% mental training;
Group 4 - 25% physical training with 75% mental training.
Group 4, with 75% of their time devoted to mental training performed the best. "The Soviets had discovered that mental images can act as a prelude to muscular impulses."
