Build Muscle To Increase Metabolism

Installing muscles photo iNSTALLING-MUSCLES_zps3d17628b.gif
Our bodies constantly burn calories, even when we’re doing nothing. This resting metabolic rate is much higher in people with more muscle. Every pound of muscle uses about 6 calories a day just to sustain itself, while each pound of fat burns only 2 calories daily. That small difference can add up over time. In addition, after a bout of resistance training, muscles are activated all over your body, increasing your average daily metabolic rate. -webmd.com

Lifting Weights Make You Lean Not Bulky

Research has shown that regular resistance training can increase your Basal Metabolic Rate by up to 15%. So for someone burning 2000 calories per day, that's a potential 300 extra calories, burned every single day.

Testosterone is a very important factor in the development of muscle shape, so as women have very low levels of this hormone their muscles develop differently, meaning a little resistance training will not lead to a bulky, butch physique.

The Scales Don't Tell You Everything

The next time you feel discouraged because the scales aren't showing any weight loss despite the fact you've been exercising, remember you may have gained muscle and burnt fat, and since fat loss is the goal, not muscle loss, the scales are not always the best way to measure progress.

Get Rid Of The Fat First, Then You'll See Your Abs

Both belly bulge and love handles are about excess body fat, not lack of muscle. Crunches and ab exercises are therefore not the solution. The best way to reduce these problem areas is to reduce your overall body fat percentage, and we all know that that requires diet and exercise. -Jillian Michaels

The Scales Are Not Always The Best Way To Measure Fat Loss

If you were to place 5lbs of fat and 5lbs of muscle side by side the fat would look about twice the size of the muscle because muscle tissue is more tightly packed than fat tissue. A 150lb person with toned muscle and a low percentage of body fat will appear slimmer than a 150lb person with low muscle development and a high percentage of body fat. As we get fitter we gain more muscle so the scales may not always accurately show our weight loss. So use other methods (as well as the scales) like a tape measure or the way your clothes fit to determine the amount of fat you've shed from your body.

Muscle Looks Smaller Than Fat

It's the fat on your body that makes you look fat. Muscle tissue looks smaller in size than fat of an equivalent weight. The more muscle you have the higher your metabolism will be and the more fat you will burn.

What You Don't Use You Lose

Why do most people lose muscle as they age? Because they don’t use it. When it comes to the human body, what you don’t use, you lose, and muscle is no exception.  –John Berardi Ph.D., author of The Metabolism Advantage
